Ground oxidised iron ore contg. silica is beneficiated by introducing the ore, a chlorine source in amount less than 15% ore and stoichiometric excess of particulate carbonaceous reductant into a vessel in which they are indirectly heated without exceeding 950 deg.C. The reaction gases are maintained in contact with the ore for sufficient period for the greater part of Fe to be transported out of the ore to sites adjacent the reductant where Fe is metallised. An agglomerate of Fe depleted ore and reductant particles held in a matrix of fine strands of Fe is formed. Ores containing finely dispersed Fe values can be beneficiated.
