The movable (11) gathering and binding unit is intended for picking up parallel flax or hemp stalks from the field and baling them whilst maintaining their parallel orientation. It comprises a gathering unit (1), a pressing unit (4) containing a duct (26) with inlet (25) and pressure plunger (27), a feed unit (3) with transport elements (19;18) between the units (1 and 4), and a baling unit (5). The (horizontal) duct (26) has its inlet (25) in its (upper) side wall and the pressure plunger (27) is movable (actuator cylinder 32) between a retracted position (as shown) when it leaves the inlet (25) fully open and an extended position when it leaves only a narrow gap on the pressure side of the plunger.FL.
