New gelling agents (I) are prepd. by reacting a smectite-type clay having a cation-exchange capacity of at least 75 meq/100 g with a cationic cpd. (II) contg. (a) a beta, gamma-unsatd. alkyl gp. or a 2-6C hydroxyalkyl gp., (b) a 12-60C alkyl gp., and (c) 2 other gps. selected from beta, gamma-unsatd. alkyl, 2-6C hydroxyalkyl, aralkyl and 1-22C alkyl. The amt. of (II) used is 90-140 (pref. 100-130) meq./100g clay (based on 100% active clay). (I) can be used as gelling agents for polyester laminating resins, polyester gel coats, thixotropic coating compsns. (paints, varnishes, etc.), lubricating greases, mastics, adhesives, cosmetics, inks, paint strippers,etc. (I) are described as auto-activating, i.e. not requiring addn. of polar dispersants, except perhaps a small amt. of water, to obtain good dispersability in nonaqueous systems.
