An appts. for generating an electrical field in the ground comprises buried electrodes connected to a power source. One electrode, esp. the cathode, is located in a zone near the ground surface, while the other electrode esp. the anode is buried deeper opt. in the water-conducting zone and near the ends of the roots. The principle of using a light electrical potential to improve the water flow into a plant in dry regions or where the water table is low is improved by the layout described, which generates a more uniform electrical field. One electrode, esp. the cathode may be made from a net of conducting plastics filaments, pref. or polyamide, acrylic or polyester or of silver-coated carbon of metal fibres embedded in an electrically conducting plastics material.
