Additive with a combustion-promoting and soot-inhibiting action for fuel oils, diesel motor fuels and other liquid burner fuels and motor fuels, especially those having a final boiling point above 300 C under normal pressure, the additive containing one or more oil-soluble and/or oil-dispersible compounds, which are active in catalysing combustion, of transition metals, such as iron, manganese, molybdenum, cobalt, nickel or copper, and/or alkaline earth metals and one or more inhibitors of polymerization and oxidation of hydrocarbons, characterized in that the oil-soluble and/or oil-dispersible compounds, which are active in catalysing combustion, of alkaline earth metals are those of calcium, strontium and/or barium and that the inhibitor present is an oxidation and polymerization inhibitor based on sterically hindered, heat-stable alkylphenols of an average molecular weight of 280 or based on N-phenylnaphthylamine (molecular weight 219), the inhibitor having such a heat stability that, as a result of its vapour pressure and/or its decomposition temperature, it can be exposed at least for short periods under normal pressure to temperatures of 300 C and higher without loss of its polymerization-inhibiting action.
