For heavy duty slow speed shafts the conventional system of lubrication by using the centrifugal force of the rotating shaft for transporting the lubricant at the highest point for distribution cannot be applied because of the very low centrifugal forces available. The ring fitted to the rotating shaft submerges partly in a sump filled with lubricant, which enters the oval-shaped cavity through a hole in the perimeter part of the ring, which then is carried up to the highest point of the shaft where it is emptied into a lubricating recess fitted with a partition to provide flow of lubricant to either side of the shaft.
