A knitting machine, particularly a circular knitting machine, has sinkers which are inserted in advance of full lowering of the needles, so that the loops being formed will lie on the back of the sinker hooks. This prevents the thread from being hooked by the sinkers and thus from being damaged. The sinkers act on previously formed loops.
