The stator windings of motors and generators having powers of a number of MW are normally constructed from integral coils whose weakest point, in insulation terms, is the winding insulation. In the event of voltage surges from the mains, said winding insulation is very highly stressed, particularly at the winding inputs, which leads to winding damage, so-called winding shorts. If an element which is "weak" in insulation terms is constructed parallel to the winding insulation on a short length in the winding overhang, that is to say at a point which is easily accessible for repair purposes, then surge voltage protection which is integrated in the winding is obtained which, although it does not prevent the local winding defect, limits the secondary damage to the machine and makes cost-effective repair possible.
