The appliance comprises a small natural sponge of approx. circular shape. This is impregnated with a suitable spermicide or, if preferred, sterile water and is then placed into a net. The net is made from fine natural silk thread and is in the form of a bag which has a fine mesh. The bag is provided with a fine silk draw string, this being pulled tight over the sponge. After use, the sponge can be removed and washed for re-use; it can be stored in a container of metal mesh.
