The transmission converts reciprocating movements from cylinders and pistons to rotary motion, and vice-versa. The relative movement of the parts is that of a circle of half radius turning in a circle of unit radius. Points on the periphery of the small circle describe cycloids of a circle which are also right segments. The smaller circle can be described by a crankshaft. The crankshaft can describe a circle following a movement perpendicular to its axis. The axis of this movement is that of the circle of unit radius.
