PURPOSE:To make easily a quality discrimination on the graphite exposed state of the internal surface of a cylinder liner made of cast iron with high precision by irradiating the internal surface with X-rays and comparing the correlation pattern between an angle of incidence and the intensity of diffracted X-rays with a reference pattern. CONSTITUTION:The internal surface 5a of the cylinder liner 5 made of cast iron by honing is irradiated with X-rays radiated from an X-ray source 3 at an angle theta of incidence through a cylindrical slit 4, and the intensity I of reflected diffracted X-rays is counted by a counter 6 to obtain the correlation pattern P between the angle theta of incidence and intensity I of the diffracted X-rays. The intensity I of the diffracted X-rays decreases gradually as the angle theta of incidence which is maximum at a specific angle thetaO of incidence increases or decreases from thetaO. When the exposure of graphite in the internal surface 5a becomes remarkable (to a good exposed state), a pattern Pa is obtained and when the exposure of graphite decreases (to a defective exposed state), a pattern Pb is obtained.
