PURPOSE:To prepare a solid solution of carbides in steel and to improve the resistance to swelling and high temp. strength in the stage of subjecting an austenitic stainless steel as a material for a cladding pipe in a fast breeder reactor to a heat treatment by applying the heat treatment under a specific condition thereto. CONSTITUTION:The austenitic stainless steel contg. 0.04-0.1% C, 10-20% Cr, 10-40% Ni, 1-3% Mo, 0.002-0.01% B, or further 1 or =2 kinds selected from 0.03-3.5% Ti, 0.05-1% Nb, 0.03-0.06% Zr, Ti/4=Al=Ti/1.5 is subjected to a heat treatment wherein said steel is heated to =1,000 deg.C at =60 deg.C/sec. heating rate. The preparation of solid solution of carbides such as Cr23C6 in the texture is almost completely effected, and the deposition thereof in a crystal is obviated. The formation of coarse crystal grains is prevented and the resistance to swelling and high temp. strength are improved.
