PURPOSE:To reduce the weight of a layer-built lead storage battery by unifying an active-material holding body with an active-material holding body located on the back surface of a partition wall by causing facing two sides of said active-material holding bodies to penetrate the partition wall, and placing a positive active material on one surface of the partition wall and a negative active material on the other surface. CONSTITUTION:A grid-like active-material-holding body 2 made of lead or a lead alloy is unified with an active-material-holding body 2 located opposite to it, by means of parts 2' and 2'', by causing opposite two sides of the active-material holding bodies 2 to penetrate an insulating partition wall 1 made of polystyrene or the like. A positive active material 3 is packed on one surface of the partition wall 1 and a negative active material 4 is packed on the other surface of the partition wall 1 thereby making a bipolar electrode. After that, the bipolar electrode is installed in a container 6 thereby constituting a layer-built lead storage battery. As a result, the weight of the battery can be reduced without causing any problem to intercellular liquid-tightness even when the thickness of the active-material holding body 2 is decreased because the partition wall 1 is made of plastics. Besides, the active-material holding ability of the active- material holding body 2 can be improved.
