Process for reclaiming and storing energy, where synthesis gas is converted into methane in a catalytic methanisation plant operating adiabatically and in at least one stage, at the location of the energy requirement for the use of the energy thus released and where a part of the gas mixture leaving the methanisation reactor is returned, after cooling, to the methanisation reactor to affect the temperature therein. According to the invention, depending on the fluctuations in the energy requirement and depending on the effect on the temperature in the methanisation reactor 4a, methanol is introduced into the latter, in addition to the synthesis gas. The invention applies especially to energy recovery.
