ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREConcentrate to be smelted is fed into a furnace along its sidewalls in order to cool the wall surfaces and a mixture of oxygen-enriched air or oxygen, and fuel is fed from the end or vaultof the furnace in order to produce molten matte and slag on thefloor of the furnace and to remove molten matte, as well asslag and flue gases, from the furnace. At least part of thefuel may consist of concentrate.
