A buffer composition for use in the electrophoretic separation of proteins into fractions, the buffer composition consisting essentially of Tris; an acid having the formula R_i-CO-NH -R₂ -COOH where R₁ is NH₂ or an alkyl or aryl group, preferably NH₂, C₆H₅ or C₆H₄NH₂ and where R₂ is an alkyl group, preferably CH₂, CH₂-CH₂ or CH(CH₃); and a water soluble salt of the acid; the acid and salt being present in amounts and in a ratio to maintain the pH of an aqueous solution of the composition at from 8.2. to 9.0. The preferred acid is hippuric acid.;This application is a continuation-in-part of application Serial No. 92,250 filed 11-7-79 entitled "Buffer Composition and Method for the Electrophoretic Separation of Proteins", the entire disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference.
