A method for stabilizing the thickened or gelled structure of a water-bearing explosive contg. oxidizer, fuel and sensitizer comprises incorporating in the explosive a stabilizing amt. of iodide ion, iodate ion, or a combination of both ions. The ions are obtd. from hydriodic acid, iodic acid; or an iodide or iodate salt delected from alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, ammonium or alkyl-substd. ammonium iodides or iodates. The sensitizer component is devoid of a sensitizing amt. of gas bubbles formed by the decompsn. of hydrogen peroxide when the stabilizer contains iodide ion and by the decompsn. of a nitrogen cpd. when the stabilizer contains iodate ion.
