The brake disc is incorporated in the brakes of railway locomotives etc. comprising annular friction plates (12) mounted on the opposite edges of radial ribs (15) cantilevering from a hub (11). Approximately radial webs (14) are provided between ribs (15) and serve to maintain plates (12) at the prescribed axial interval. Ribs (15) may comprise an inboard extension of certain webs (14), both ribs (15) and webs (14) having a helical form at a definite inclination to the hub (11) axis. The unit may be a one piece casting of iron with spheroidal graphite and a ferritic structure.
