The mobile index is mounted on a slide caliper or a similar measuring gauge in order to be able to take measurement in places of difficult access. The index is such that it is moved by the slide when taking a measurement. The graduations on this index then coincide with the graduations on the slide. When the slide is moved back, in order to remove the caliper from the measurement place, the index stays in place so that the operator can still read the value of the parameter. The operator can take with a high accuracy a measurement in a place whose access is difficult, then remove the caliper and read the measurement without the relative spacings being disturbed.
