Cables of bare steel wire are protected by incorporation in the central part of wires of aluminium, cadinium, electrolyte or light alloy, which act as sacrificial anodes to provide cathodic protection of the steel. The steel wires do not need to be zinc-coated and the cable life when used in sea water is increased by two or three times.
