A slide can move along a bar and be locked into one of several fixed positions along it. The positiones correspond to certain distances from the fixed jaw. The movable jaw (11) is mounted on the slide and can move on it, parallel to the bar, over a distance at least equal to that between two fixed positions. A rod (35) touches a micro-switch (250) to cause its 'outer' contact to close. A start count is delivered for the electrical circuit corresponding to the preset position of the jaw (11). When the button (34) is pulled out and rotated about 320 deg. to reach another position the micro-switch is operated again, but this time the 'inner' measuring contact is closed.
