The continuous pattern sheet (32) is pre-moulded by pressing it under pressure against the cavity surface of a female mould (18), molten plastic being injected from a male mould (16). The sheet has several patterns and register marks, pref. comprising line segments for precisely locating it in orthogonal directions using photosensor means (54), and is located in the mould by holding and transferring means (100), the pattern sheet being advanced by one pitch each time. Pref. pattern sheet holding and transferring means includes heating means (44a) so that the pattern sheet is heated and softened as it is transported to the mould.
