The dam or barrage (10) is provided by a modular receptacle (12) stretched across the bed of a river, and a number of caissons (25) in the receptacle in side adjacent relationship. The receptacle may consist of a number of modules which are installed progressively across the river. The caissons are then introduced into the receptacle. The base caissons (12) are floated to their intended positions and the forward (13) and rearward (14) bulkheads removed to flood it and sink it into the desired position.
