The unit has a housing divided into at least two adjacent compartments (6a,6b,2) respectively containing the lavatory pan (17) and a cleaning device. The latter is associated with a rotary pivot arm (5) with one of a number of alternate cleaning elements (29a-29d) fitted to its free end (5e) and controlled to bring the cleaning element (29a-29d) into contact with the lavatory pan (17) and with the walls (8) of the lavatory compartment (6a,6b). A central microprocessor controls the system and incorporates a ROM storing the control programme and a RAM for use by the micro. to store monitored information. The processor has a number of sensors and inputs associated with a lavatory system and several control outputs driving motors and the like. The hardware further includes counters and comparators.
