The night commode cum chair uses a pivot-down shutter (13) on a seat (23) opening together with a laterally retractable pot (22) on a swing arm (9). The shutter is doubly retained at closure, the pot is retained beneath the seat by the occupant's mass when the opening is closed, and shutter opening movement is prevented unless the pot has been retracted. A lever (1) operates the shutter through a shaft crank (5), a push rod (6) and a cantilever (11), and closure retention uses misalignment of the pin-joints (19,20,21). A similarly controlled (8,9) hinged flap (3) engages a bolt (2) to provide a secondary shutter retention, the retentive linkage (8,9) incorporating the pot arm. A stop (7) prevents handle operation unless the pot has been withdrawn.
