PURPOSE:To obtain a heat treated composite sintered body consisting of high- speed steel and titanium carbide for a tool material by dispersing a large number of titanium carbide particles in the structure of heat treated high-speed steel and by sintering the resulting structure to form a composite structure. CONSTITUTION:A powdery mixture consisting of 10-50wt% titanium carbide powder and 90-10wt% high-speed steel powder is press-molded and sintered at 1,300-1,600 deg.C in vacuum or in gaseous hydrogen. The sintered body is hardened at 1,170-1,250 deg.C and temperated at 560-600 deg.C to obtain a heat treated sintered body. This sintered body has a composite structure formed by dispersing a large number of titanium carbide particles in the structure of heat treated high-speed steel and by sintering the resulting structure.
