The method is intended for growing plants. Seeds or seedlings are placed on or in buoyant containers (15) which are supplied at one side to an at least partly liquid-filled (18) basin. The fully grown plants (14), together with their containers, are removed from the basin at a point removed from the supply point. The containers may be provided with capillary passages whilst the liquid contains nutrients. The liquid temperature may be controlled, oxygen may be introduced, and it may be agitated. The container may be weighted (16) to float in an upright position.
