The clamp for a workpiece (32) in a machine tool has a table (28) containing several openings (66) with a removable cover (92) covering selected openings. Several first clamp portions are situated below the openings and second clamp portions arranged to interlock with the first clamp portions. Each second clamp portion has a part which engages a workpiece on the table. It is movable towards the table to clamp the workpiece. The clamp is used in machine tools which have a film of pressurised air on which the workpieces are supported as they move from one machining position to another. Chips and debris do not collect in the openings. Clamping pressure can be applied to the workpiece at any point desired. Loss of pneumatic pressure is prevented.
