- 1 -Abstract:A vacuum retaining arrangement retains the vacuumwithin the condenser of a steam power plant during a shortterm outage or shutdown. At least a portion of turbinegland packing near the condenser, with respect to a sealingsteam supply, is connected to communicate with an airextractor through a gland condenser. The sealing steamthat would otherwise flow into the condenser from theturbine gland package is extracted from the gland packinginto the gland condenser and the air extractor during theshort term outage or shutdown so as to prevent the sealingsteam from leaking into the condenser, The result is asavings in power due to the ability to stop the watercirculating pump for the condenser.
