A system for the extraction of a hydrocarbon fuel from a hydrocarbon fuel-bearing ore, such as shale or coal, comprises means (10) for mining the ore, and a plurality of portative retorts (24) for processing the mined ore to produce a hydrocarbon fuel. Means (28) is provided for transporting the mined ore to each of the retorts (24), means (32) coupled to the transport means (28) regulating the amount of ore transported to a respective retort (24). At least one storage device is coupled to the retorts (24) for collecting and storing the hydrocarbon fuel. The retorts (24) are moved in consonance with movement of the mining of the ore.
