Method of damping the swell or lapping by means of rigid longitudinal elements kept floating in the vicinity of the water surface, disposed substantially in parallel relation to each other, their shapes, their sizes and their spacings being such that they would create a turbulent flow of the water, characterized in that the orbital surface stream is channelled between the said longitudinal elements, these being placed substantially in parallel relation to the direction of displacement of the swell.
