In order to prevent catalytic converters in exhaust systems being damaged by leaded fuel, or in order to be able to use either leaded or unleaded fuel for internal combustion engines, and at the same time to take account of the statutory regulations on exhaust emission control, the system outlined in the enclosure in fig. 1 and fig.2 has been defined. A detector connected into the intake line detects, by means of a physical principle, whether harmful lead fractions are contained in the fuel used and by way of a signal amplifier operates a valve in the exhaust port, which diverts the exhaust gas flow either by way of the catalytic converter port or by way of the conventional exhaust gas port. With suitable design (blind closure) the said valve, which may also be manually operated, can be attached or retrofitted to conventional exhaust systems together with catalytic converter port and detector.
