In the method according to the invention for testing the adhesive strength of a chemically applied nickel coating on a metallic base material, a permanent indentation is applied on a side face of the component with the aid of an indenter in such a way that a permanent bulge is imparted to the component face adjoining the side face at the edge, the base material being stretched. By observing the nickel coating at this bulge under a microscope or the like, it is possible to make a definitive statement regarding the adhesive strength representative of component sections or, for not excessively complicated components, of the entire component.
