The apparatus serves for the sterile connection of sterile feed air coming from a sterile filter to a feed air line in a fermenter. A piston-cylinder unit 38 is arranged on this, whose piston-rod-side first cylinder space 10 can be connected to a steam feed 28 and whose other, second cylinder space 11 can be connected to the sterile feed air via a feed air connection 6. The piston rod 9 is hollow and is designed at its free end for the tight connection to the connection end 14 of the feed air line which is closed at its connection end 14 and is furnished with a transverse borehole 13 arranged at a distance therefrom. This transverse borehole, in the idle position of the apparatus, is connected to the hollow inner region 12 of the piston rod 9 and, in the operating position of the apparatus, is not connected to the inner region 12, but ends openly in the fermenter. The hollow inner region 12 of the piston rod 9, in the idle position, is only connected to the second cylinder space 11 and in the operating position is only connected to the first cylinder space 10.
