The invention relates to the melting of metals under an electrically conducting slag. The method which is the subject of the invention is of the type consisting in applying, to a control member 4, a control signal supplied by a probe 1 immersed in the bath of slag 7, and is characterised in that, as control signal, use is made of the voltage U2 appearing at the probe 1/metal bath 8 gap because of the passage of an electric current through the slag, and in that, according to this control signal, the level of the metal bath 8 relative to the end of the probe 1 is assessed.
