PURPOSE:To form the titled composite material having superior hardness by using a continuous alumina fiber contg. specified percentages of Al2O3, SiO2 and other components and having a specified mullite crystal content as a reinforcing fiber. CONSTITUTION:A continuous alumina fiber consisting of 65-95wt% Al2O3, 35-5wt% SiO2 and 0-10wt% other components is heat treated to deposit =15wt%, preferably 15-20wt% mullite crystal layer. At this time, at least part of the fiber except the mullite crystal layer is a component other than alpha-Al2O3. The treated continuous alumina fiber is used as a reinforcing fiber and Al, Mg or an Al-Mg alloy as a matrix metal to form a composite material.
