PHOTOGRAPHIC MEROCYANINE DYE

PURPOSE:To use a specified merocyanine dye as a photographic dye having superior stability on standing in an aqueous soln. and free from residual coloring after development. CONSTITUTION:A merocyanine dye having a substituted indolenyl group at the 4- position of the pyrazolone ring through a methine chain and represented by the general formula [where R1 is alkyl, aryl, alkoxycarbonyl, carboxy, amino, anilino, sulfamoyl, acylamino or hydroxy; and R2 is alkyl (aryl) having a sulfo group] is used as a light absorbing dye for a silver halide photographic material. When the photographic emulsion layer is colored, the above-mentioned dye is preferably added in a concn. of about 1-3%.
