PURPOSE:To extract efficiently Fe (III) under reduction from an org. phase contg. a ferric salt [Fe (III) salt] extracted with a specified acidic extracting reagent by allowing gaseous SO2 or a sulfurous acid deriv. to coexist with a mineral acid in an aqueous phase for back extraction. CONSTITUTION:A ferric salt [Fe (III) salt] is extracted with an acidic extracting reagent such as ''Versatic acid '', other carboxylic acid, di-2-ethylhexylphosphoric acid or LIX to prepare an org. phase contg. Fe (III). To the org. phase is added an aqueous soln. contg. gaseous SO2 or a sulfurous acid deriv. as well as a mineral acid, or gaseous SO2 is blown into a vapor phase contacting with an aqueous soln. to carry out stirring. Fe (III) is transferred to the aqueous phase as ferrous ions (Fe2+) by back extraction. Thus, Fe (III) in the org. phase is efficiently extracted.
