PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound in high yield, by oxidizing leuco-1,4- diaminoanthraquiinone into 1,4-diaminoanthraquinone in dimethyl sulfoxide in the same reactor and subsequently cyanogenating the resultant compound. CONSTITUTION:1,4-Diaminoanthraquinone (preferably 1,4-diaminoanthraquinone obtained by oxidizing leuco-1,4-diaminoanthraquinone in dimethyl sulfoxide solvent according to the conventional method) is subsequently subjected to a cyanogenation process and reacted with an alkali cyanide compound in a molar amount of 3 times or more based on the 1,4-diaminoanthraquinone in the presence of ammonium bicarbonate in dimethyl sulfoxide solvent at 60-150 deg.C. The amount of by-products is reduced without requiring the conversion of the 1,4-diaminoanthraquinone into sulfonated compounds or halides as in the well-known method.
