An intermetallic powder compsn. is obtd. by blending a mixt. of elemental powders with a process control agent, followed by mechanical alloying. The material is then heated at a temp. below the m.pt. of any of the constituents. Pref. the compsn. is based on aluminium with the second component being a harder metal.
