A process for controlling the action in plant cells and plants of a glutamine synthetase inhibitor (I) comprises providing the plants with a heterologous DNA including a foreign nucleotide sequence, capable of being expressed in the form of a protein in the plant cells and plants, under conditions such as to cause the heterologous DNA to be integrated stably through generations in the cells of the plants, and where the protein has an enzymatic activity capable of causing inactivation or neutralisation of (I).
