Simultaneous, one step reduction of iron, manganese arsenic and methane contamination from mixed waters of different sources is carried out, in this case after permanganate pretreatment by contacting the water with air over a large surface area. This can be done in open or closed vessels by aeration or by atomizing the water. Oxidn. of contaminants takes place during aeration and methane is liberated. The treated water is allowed then to pass through a sand filter the grains of which are coated with hydrated ion oxide. The emerging effluent contains only a fraction of the original contaminants.
