Rust converting and protective primer contains (all wt.%) 40-70 synthetic dispn., 4-20 of a complexing agent, based on phenol or a multivalent phenolic cpd., 1-5 carboxy-methyl cellulose, 0-20 filler, 0-25 diluent, 0.1-0.3 surfactant, 0.05-0.2 antifoam, 0.5-4 neutral salt of an organic ac. and a short C chain mono-, di- or tri-alkyl-amines or of a quaternary ammonium base, and 0.2-1 potassium-ferro-cyanide and/or 0.2-1 potassium-ferri-cyanide and or 0.2-1 sodium-tetra-borate.
