Pollen formation in cereal grain plants is inhibited by application of a 4,5-dicarboxy or 5-carboxamido-4-carboxy (or derivatized carboxy)-1-(3,5-disubstituted-phenyl)pyrazole. CHEM Use of the compounds facilitates the production of hybrid seed. wherein R and R1 independently represent chloro, bromo or C1-C4 alkyl, R2 is hydroxy, C1-C4 alkoxy, C3-C4 alkenyloxy, C3-C4 alkynyloxy, or a phytologically-acceptable moiety forming a salt of the carboxylic acid; or R2 and R3 taken together represent -NH- so as to form an imide; R3 is NH2, hydroxy, or a phytologically-acceptable moiety forming a salt of the carboxylic acid; provided that R3 is NH2 when R2 is alkoxy, alkenyloxy or alkynyloxy and that R2 and R3 are the same when R3 is other than NH2.
