Mechanism changes different-size heads engaged by the end link of a starting chain of a (continuous) billet casting machine whereby the head is placed in the casting mould to stop and engage the leading end of the cast material and is moved by the chain and subsequently detached. Each head has a T-section projection to engage a complementary slot in the link parallel to the link pivot axes. It comprises a member swivelable through 90 deg. to move the end of the chain with head between a position in, and a position beside, the billet track and a height-adjustable support for the end link with the head. A head change magazine arranged above the support comprises actuators with electromagnets or the like to engage a head and lift it in the direction of the T-slot and insert another in reverse direction.
