Method comprises feeding (2,3,4) this material to the knitting line (between ends of 3 and 5) whereto parallel threads (10) are fed via tubular needles (9) on a movable beam whilst hooked slide needles (6) and hook closure needles (7) on respective beams are inserted through the material to engage the threads (10) and, on retraction, form pile loops anchored to the material by threads of the preceding row. A second sheet of parallel threads (12) is fed between the first (10) and the material via eyed needles (11) on a movable beam whilst the first threads (10) are held (8) aside and engage below the threads (12) on the needles (6) such that, on retraction of the needles (6,7), the pile loops are formed and bonded by the threads (12) without themselves being pulled through the material.
