The tooth apertures on the tool working edge vary evenly in height, rising from one end of the edge to the other. This permits the strip of putty emerging through them to be spread efficiently. An alternative form is for all the tooth apertures to be of the same height. An adjustable imposed blade is fitted to the plate so that it is adjustable between a position where it wholly covers all the apertures and one where it frees them with evenly rising height from one end to the other.
