In a well logging process are the following machine-implemented steps: deriving formation dips from logs produced by a dipmeter tool passed through a borehole; providing blockboard storage, 36, for the dips and for additional user-selected subsurface characteristic; processing the dips and additional characteristics in an inference engine, 34, operating on the basis of geological rules each having a premise of one or more tokens, each comprising a geological assertion or fact concerning an attribute of a well log or subsurface feature, and the relationship between the tokens; producing a record of geological characteristics of subsurface formations based upon conclusions reached by the inference engine using the rules, if the tokens in the premise part of a rule and the relationship therebetween are found in the blockboard store.
