The sail hoisting/reefing mechanism includes a roller boom (2) associated with a mast (1) which mounts a pulley at the top, with a halyard (11) passing over the pulley. The halyard has its opposite ends connected to hoisting (8) and reefing (4) drums. The drums are selectively rotatable by a clutch (25) in response to movement of a ratchet mechanism or dog teeth engagement. The ratchet or teeth effect locking of both drums after hoisting, with release being achieved before reefing.
