A clarification tank for the purification of organic waste waters has a vessel (1) which is dimensioned for low heat loss. In the vessel (1) is provided a submerged body (2) as colonization surface for microorganisms. Beneath the submerged body (2) is situated an aeration apparatus (3). The bottom (9) of the vessel (1) is funnel-shaped. A circulation pipe (4) with a pump (5) pumps the vessel contents from the bottom (9) to the waste water level (8), from where it flows in counter-current to the gas through the submerged body (2). The outlet (11) for the purified waste water opens out beneath the submerged body (2). The clarifying apparatus and, in particular, the submerged body (2) is constantly accessible for measurements, maintenance and repair work through an inspection shaft (14). IMAGE
